Immune cells in the brain called microglia are becoming chronically activated leading to the release of cytokines and free radicals causing inflammation and damage to the nervous system. This inflammatory state promotes a leaky blood-brain barrier, oxidative stress and damage to the mitochondria. All of these lead to the myriad of chronic neurological diseases on the rise in our population from dementia, depression, poor recovery from traumatic brain injury, and developmental disorders in children. Unfortunately, many factors in our environment lead to this perpetual inflammatory immune reaction including poor diet, persistent infections, environmental toxins and traumatic brain injuries. Dr Turnpaugh will discuss his understanding of ongoing neurological inflammation along with his targeted treatment approach.
Objectives
- Understand the basic pathology of neuroinflammation and how it causes damage in the nervous system and induces subsequent oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction.
- Learn about microglial priming from environmental factors that can worsen outcomes in neurologic disease.
- Learn about Dr Turnpaugh’s targeted treatment approach for different chronic brain disorders.
