Dr Sonia Rapaport
Sonia Rapaport, MD, is a family physician and director of Haven Medical, a listening-based medical practice in Chapel Hill, NC. Board certified in both family medicine and in integrative and holistic medicine, she blends the best of conventional and complementary modalities to address the cause of symptoms. Dr. Rapaport’s specialty is the holistic evaluation and treatment of individuals with complex, multisystem illnesses as she helps them towards the goal of optimal health.
Dr. Rapaport received her M.D. from the University of Virginia in 1991. After residency, she relocated to NC, where she worked in a primary care practice and served as the medical consultant for the health department. After the births of her two youngest children with special needs, Dr. Rapaport retired from the practice of medicine and devoted her time to her children and to writing. While caring for her children, she began to explore the biochemical and genetic causes of their disease, a neuroprogressive disorder for which conventional medicine has little to offer. She returned to her medical practice in 2005 and received her MFA in Creative Writing in 2007. In 2008, she founded Haven Medical, a holistic, integrative medical practice in Chapel Hill.
Certification with Dr. Shoemaker is the culmination of a process that began when she realized that many of her patients with Lyme disease and chronic fatigue were symptomatic of the chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS) found with biotoxin exposure. In the midst of uncertain diagnoses, finding lab abnormalities that improve with treatment and correspond to similar improvements in symptoms is a breath of fresh air. She applies her clinical knowledge and skills to partner with individuals suffering from chronic fatigue, Lyme disease, hormonal imbalances, dysautonomias, cancer, and other chronic illnesses.
Dr. Rapaport is certified in trigger point injection therapy and hyperbaric medicine. She is a Reiki Master and a Master level SCENAR therapist (and Levels I-III trainer). Dr. Rapaport has spoken nationally on integrative medicine and in 2002 presented a talk on inherited dysautonomias at the NIH. She served on the Board of the American Holistic Medical Association, and is a founder and the current president of Familial Dysautonomia Hope Foundation.
